Pizza Paddles Are Really Useful Pieces Of Equipment!

Inserting a pizza into the pizza oven needs to be done with care due to the extremely high temperature required for pizza cooking.  At optimum cooking temperature pizza ovens can reach white hot and it is advisable to introduce the pizza using a special device called a paddle. No oven glove is going to be long enough to protect your arms.

Pizza paddles are designed to be thin and easily removed once the pizza is in place.  They are made from a variety of materials such as, aluminium and other metals, various wood, slate etc.  Pizza paddes resemble large oven slices or flat shovels, with a flat paddle surface attached to a handle.  They are also known as pizza peels or paker's peels due to the action of 'peeling' food from a oven.

They are made in various sizes and can be purchased quite cheaply from $5 up to $50 depending on the materials and quality. A good quality paddle made of a hard grained wood or stainless steel will be at the middle to top end of this scale, whereas a pine or cheaper wood version would be much less expensive.  The better quality the longer lived this article will be.  For normal domestic use, a cheaper version will suffice unless it is to be used very frequently.

They require very little attention other than a thorough wipe down to remove food residues. The wood variety can be seasoned with a wipe over with a tasteless mineral oil now and then to condition and protect the wood from the heat.

They are well worth acquiring as suffering a burn from an oven whilst trying to get a pizza in or out is not worth the risk.  If you have a friend or family member who has a wood fired pizza ovens, it would make a wonderful gift. If they have one already it will still be used eventually and who knows, maybe they will start a collection!

Cooking pizza particularly your own home made ones from scratch will encourage you to use your pizza oven frequently, as the results are so good. You can of couse rely on pre-prepared pizza as well if time is short. A home made pizza is far superior in that they are much healthier, you can control the amounts of salt and fat that are added and there are no chemical additives or preservatives at all. Making pizza dough is fairly simple and you can experiment with finding the best pizza sauce recipe and toppings to your hearts desire. So once you have your oven and a pizza paddle or two you are all set to make the best pizzas you have ever tasted!!
